Dr. Brown-Elize
Today, Dr. Rashitta Brown-Elize serves as Vice President of Student Services, a trusted speaker, and a champion for equity in higher education. But her path wasn’t typical.
She was born in Clinton, Oklahoma to a 14-year-old mother still in middle school. Her early years were marked by instability, housing insecurity, and frequent school changes. By the time she entered college, she had moved 13 times and attended nine different schools.
Admitted to Cal State Northridge through the Educational Opportunity Program (EOP), Rashitta struggled to find her footing. After her first year, she was academically dismissed. It was a devastating moment—one that could have ended her college journey. Instead, it became a turning point. Encouraged by her mother’s firm belief in her potential, Rashitta returned to college, asked for help, and slowly began to rebuild. Eventually, she returned as a writing professor at the very university where she once struggled.
With the support of professors, mentors, and family, she went on to earn her Doctor of Education from the University of Southern California. Her dissertation received national recognition for its contribution to equity in education. She now uses her story and experience to support students, mentor educators, and help institutions build more inclusive, student-ready environments.
